Baby Ruth Black was born November 19, 1931, the eldest child born to the late Maxzine "Polly" Reid and West Gray. At an early age, she left Mississippi and moved to California. She was a member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, California, where she was an active member of "The Women Missionary Ministry" and served on several church committees. Baby Ruth worked with the, "San Francisco Municipal School District", where she retired from her position as a "Dietary Worker". She was a very kind hearted person and she loved people. She loved to make sure those she loved, "ate well" and that they wore a smile on their face. "Babe Ruth" or "Ruth" as she was called by many of her friends -had the kind of smile that would brighten up your day. OnJuly 1, 1962, Baby Ruth married Mr. Charles Black, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister: Annie Bell Harris, two brothers: Robert Gray and Henry Hamilton, two aunts: Ida Lee Watts and Emma McCarty and two uncles: Woodrow and Buddy Reid. Throughout her 84 years here on earth, Baby Ruth's willingness to serve others and her loving smile made an impact on many individuals from Shubuta, Mississippi to Richmond, California, where she resided until her declining health. She moved back to Mississippi to live with her niece, "Lois". On Sunday, January 17, :z016, at 4:45 p.m. at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS, she humbly surrendered this earthly living for her new home. "Aunt Ruth", as she was called by many family members, had a "touch" that enabled one to feel the love within her heart. She leaves to cherish her memories, a special niece and caretaker: Annie "Lois" Lockhart of Hattiesburg, MS, five nieces: Helen Ruth Brown of New York, Louise, Vera, Willie Bell Harris and Lisa McDonald all of Cleveland, OH, two nephews: Bobby and Curtis Harris both of Cleveland, OH, God-daughter: Andrea "Polly" Pickens, god-grandchildren: Shandrea, Ayden, and J aniya all of DeSoto, MS, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends extending from Ohio, California, Illinois, and Mississippi along with her extended St.John Missionary Baptist Church family in Richmond, CA.
