Dr. Annis Annette McKenzie Collins' Obituary
Annis Annette McKenzie Collins was born on April 24, 1942 to the late Washington & Katie Jasper McKenzie. She was the second child of 19 children. Annis accepted Christ at an early age and united with Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. She later moved to Detroit, Michigan where she united with the New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Upon retirement she relocated back to her hometown where she united with the Shiloh MB Church and served until God called her home. She departed this life on Friday, February 23, 2018 at 7:00 am in Quitman, MS. She received her education and graduated from Shirley Owens High School, Class of 1959 in Quitman, MS. She received her Associates of Arts degree from Wayne County Community College in Detroit, Ml; Her Bachelor's of Arts degree from Spring Arbor College in Spring Arbor, Ml; a Master's degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Science degree, both from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She later received an honorary Doctorate of Pedagogy degree as well as an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree, both from the Agape Bible College. She was a true humanitarian for county, civic and cultural involvement in her community. She served as Executive Director of the Ujima Cultural Center, a nonprofit organization, since its conception in 2006; Parliamentarian of the National Council of Negro Women Clarke County Section; Chairman of the City of Quitman Municipal Democratic Committee; Membership Chair for the NAACP Clarke County Branch; Member of Clarke County Democratic Executive Committee; Coordinator for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation for Clarke and Lauderdale Counties and a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 4982. All her life she has been a strong advocate for children's education.
She was united in marriage to Charlie D. Collins who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her son, Carl Gregory McKenzie; her sister Odessa McKenzie; her brothers, Jerry McKenzie and Nathaniel Davis. She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Jeffory Darryll (Gladys) McKenzie of Clinton, MS; Troy Daniel McKenzie of Quitman, MS and a daughter-in-law, Janette McKenzie of Quitman, MS. Eight grandchildren: Delandre Smith, Laregus Smith, Octavia Smith, Edrah Rembert, Darrius McKenzie, Demetri McKenzie, Dexter McKenzie and Kadejah McKenzie. Five great-grandchildren: Dallas Smith, Skylar Harris, D'Mari Harris, Domenik McKenzie, and Deandre Smith. Also cherishing her love and memories are 16 brothers and sisters: Abraham (Daisy) McKenzie; Ella (Richard) Young; Willie (Neldia) McKenzie, all of Quitman, MS; Leavester (Doris) McKenzie of Laurel, MS; Annie Mae(Wilbur) Holmes of Mt. Dora, FL; Calvin (Sarah) McKenzie; Washington (Faye)McKenzie, Jr.; Sylvester (Catherine) McKenzie; Advial (Dora) McKenzie; Lender (George) Carter, all of Quitman, MS; Barbara (Oscar) Westley of Brownstown, Ml; Carolyn (Sherman) Turner of Mableton, GA; Janet Baldwin of Hattiesburg, MS; Noah D. Sterling of Shubuta, MS; Pearline (Claude) Cole of Mableton, GA; Anthony (Teressa) McKenzie of Quitman, MS and a sister-in-law Vertia Mae Davis of Quitman, MS. She also leaves to cherish her memories: Two aunts; Minnie Jasper of Quitman, MS and Sarah Hamilton of Jefferson, LA; and one uncle; Jim McKenzie of Quitman, MS Also a mighty host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
