Ms. Brenda Bernice Delaine's Obituary
On Saturday, December 9, 2017 in Meridian, Mississippi, a very busy life came to a sad closure when our beloved, Brenda Bernice Delaine was called from labor to reward. Brenda (who was lovingly called “Gulley” by her family) was born August 8, 1955 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, to the late Mrs. Bernice Coleman Delaine and Professor R.P. Delaine. Her maternal grandparents, Lorena (Alston) and Burrell Coleman also preceded her in death. She joined St. Paul United Methodist Church at an early age and was an active participant in Youth Ministries and the Board of Stewards. She was also a member and Recording Secretary of the Las Amigas Social Club.
Educated in local public schools, Brenda graduate from Meridian High School, Class of 1973. She pursued higher education at Mississippi University for Women where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology in 1977. In 1990, she received a Master of Education degree at Mississippi State University’s Graduate School of Counselor Education-Community Counseling.
Having served as a Children’s and Youth therapist at Weems Community Mental Health Center, Brenda devoted her career to counseling and public service. She worked as an Alcohol/Drug Prevention Specialist at East Central Mississippi A/D & Community Services, informing citizens and significant target groups on drugs and alcohol usage and abuse. She spoke at local schools, church and youth groups regarding the perils of drug use while providing therapy and consultation.
Brenda was a social worker for the City of Meridian Housing Authority and a Psychology Associate and Psychology Technician at East Mississippi State Hospital. She was recognized for 10 years of service to the East Mississippi Correctional Facility.
Brenda was a fun-loving woman who always had a good story to tell that made any listener erupt in laughter! She was very witty and blessed with a zeal for knowledge. She enjoyed reading, sports, singing and cooking!
Brenda was preceded in death by her siblings: Lorena C. Delaine Brown; Robert W. Delaine; Lorenzo Sherell Delaine and Edward Charles (Pete) Delaine
Left to cherish the loving memories of Brenda B. Delaine are; her loving nephew and caretaker, Leddrick R. Brown of Meridian, MS; a devoted cousin, Ruth E. Thompson Dove of Meridian; uncle, James W. Coleman of San Francisco, Ca; cousins: Andreesa Coleman; Connie L. Dock; Charles Delaine; John M. Thompson; Walter N. Thompson; Dorothy Jean Singletary; Patricia Rose Dewar; Kenneth E. Thomas; Gwen Chamberlain; Carolyn L. Smith; George Ewing Jr.; J. Maurice Thomas and Rebecca M. Caleb and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
