Mr. Calvin D. Hampton, Sr.'s Obituary
Calvin Hampton, Sr., also referred to as "Coach Hamp", was a man that always put the people of his community before himself. Calvin served in various roles that will impact others in his community for decades to come. Calvin Hampton, Sr., served as a father, mentor, community activist, and coach, but most importantly he was a great man. Calvin loved the game of football and held different coaching jobs, including stints as a head coach and as an assistant coach. During his productive career, Calvin sperit time at Southeast Lauderdale High School, Meridian High School, and West Lauderdale High School. For their own unique reasons, each school and community held a special place in his heart. They helped him evolve from a young man graduating from college into a great football coach. Calvin was a student-athlete at the University of West Alabama where he was a member of the football team and Kapa Alpha Psi Inc.
With so much on his daily agenda, Calvin still made it a top priority to interact with his children, family, friends, and people of his community on a daily and regular basis. In a recent interview with a local news outlet, Calvin was asked what success meant for him. His response was that developing a player to do everything they could do academically, or helping a player with low self-esteem, a troubled background, or problems at home, was success for him. “If I made their life better or taught them skills to help them survive and make it to the next day, that’s a success for me.”
Calvin was preceded in death by his grandparents: Hughie & Helen Hampton; Cornelius & Gladys Blair; father, Willie Hampton. He leaves behind to cherish his loving memory: one son, Calvin Hampton Jr., and one daughter, Kiersten Lachelle Hampton. Calvin is also survived by his mother, Vickie Hampton; sisters, Maquan Hampton, Deborah Sawyer, and Margarita Miller; brothers, Willie Hampton Jr., and Willie L. Hampton; and a nephew, Antoneus Johnson.
Calvin Hampton, Sr., also had a group of special friends that he referred to as brothers, as well as other close friends who meant a great deal to him.
