Mrs. Carrie L. Barrett's Obituary
Today we celebrate the life of Carrie Louise Jackson. On a Monday in July, the 26 to be exact, in 1926 Carrie Louise Jackson entered this world. Of nine children, she was the third child of Ola Myers and it has been said that she had a mind of her own and did it her way. Sister as she was fondly called by her family grew up in a small house located outside of Lauderdale, Mississippi. Her mother was a sharecropper. While most of her siblings worked in the field, Sister cooked. This "job" set the course for a life-long career. She was a great cook and made the best dressing in the world! When she became of age, Sister moved to Meridian. Shortly after her arrival here, she united with Mt. Calvary M.B. Church where she served faithfully for more than four decades-she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Adult Choir, and an usher. Later she married Willie Barrett and eventually moved her membership to St. John. She served St. John as a Deaconess, a choir member, and a faithful Sunday School participant. Sister moved to Meridian around 1947. The skills she acquired cooking for her family, developed into a career as a chef-first as a cook at Poplar Springs Elementary School. After several years with the school system, she began cooking at the Navy Base for years where she eventually became the head cook and later a chef at several restaurants around Meridian, finally culminating her career at First Presbyterian Church, Meridian. After she retired, she spent most of her time taking care of her ailing mother, sister, and brother. She did this until her health begin to fail. She departed this life Sunday, August 14, 2022. She is survived by one daughter, Bertha Ealey, three grandchildren, Timolin Langin (Los Angeles, CA), Sebrina Russell (Lawrence, Las Vegas, NV), Melody Gibson (Maurice, Redlands, CA); six great-grandchildren, Shamika Moriera, Trone Jackson (Deja), Tatyana Davenport, Brapdy Russell, Lawerence Russell, Jr. and Myla Gibson; and four great, great-grandchildren, Shaniece Moriera, Skylar-Chanel Graves, Leilani Gianna Jackson, Lennix Louise Jackson; one sister, Dorothy Jackson and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carrie was preceded in death by her mother, Ola Myers; five sisters: Mary Lewis, Addie Mosley, Ethel Hopson, Ella Jackson, Geneva Pollard; two brothers: Edward Earl Jackson, Grady Jackson; one grandson, James Langin, Jr.
