Mr. Ellis Sloan Sr.'s Obituary
Ellis Sloan Sr. was born on March 13, 1925 in Lauderdale County Mississippi to the late Hester and Freeman Sloan. To this union six children were born; Delories Sloan, Roletha Mccurty (deceased), Geneva Cummings (deceased), R. D. Sloan (deceased), and Amos Sloan (deceased). He accepted Christ at an early age at the Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church. In May of 1943 he joined the United States Navy and went off to fight in WWII. He served his country until March of 1947 when he was honorably discharged. After the military he met the love of his life, Katie R. Gray. They packed up and moved from Meridian, Mississippi to Chicago, Illinois where they later married on April 25, 1951. To this union three children were born; Ellis Jr.,Caroline and Patricia. Ellis and Katie were blissfully married for forty-nine years up until Katie passed away in 2000. Right after moving to Chicago, Katie and Ellis found a church home at Sunshine Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and served on many boards. Mr. Sloan was also a hard worker. He ran a very lucrative plumbing business when he was not working at his main job at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad. After the death of his wife, Ellis moved back to Meridian where he then joined Mount Olive Baptist Church and he continued to serve in many capacities until his health began to fail. During his long and full life he enjoyed fishing, being with his family and watching a good western movie. Mr. Sloan was a committed, diligent, and faithful worker for the Lord until he was called home on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. He ยท leaves to cherish his precious memories, two daughters: Caroline Sanders and Patricia Isaiah (Chicago, IL), one son, Ellis Sloan Jr. (Meridian, MS), one brother-in-law, Clarence Rushing (Chicago. IL}, one daughter in law, Georgia Sloan (Chicago,IL), one sister, Delories Sloan (Meridian, MS); three granddaughters: lshalnicka Sloan of Naperville, IL, Jonica Witherspoon (Marvin) of Chicago, IL, Elisha Watkins of Houston, TX and one grandson Myron Sloan of Aurora, CO; twelve great grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many wonderful special friends. A special thank you to his dedicated caregivers that took such wonderful care of him; Ms. Mavis Lanier, Ms. Shanika Smith, Ms. Brenda Singleton, Ms. Patricia Lewis, Home Instead Senior Care and Compassus Hospice of Meridian. There will never be another like Deacon Ellis Sloan Sr., he will be sorely missed.
