Mrs. Essie L. McCallum's Obituary
Essie Lou Carter Whitsett McCallum was the sixth child born on June 7, 1949 to the late Essie and Lucy Carter in Kemper County, Mississippi.
Essie accepted Christ at an early age at Blues Chapel Church where she remained a dedicated member until her health declined. She served in many capacities including lay leader, treasurer, choir member, usher, and many other positions as needed.
Essie was a 1967 graduate of Spencer High School in Scooba, MS. She was a Director of Head Start in the Scooba community for many years. Later in life, she continued her education at Meridian Community College where she received a Licensed Practical Nurse degree and an Associated Degree of Nursing (RN).
Essie worked for Rush Hospital for 27 years before retiring in 2008. She worked in various capacities, but her favorite department of the hospital was the Emergency Room. She was a mentor for many nurses and staff.
Essie was affectionately known to family and friends as “Sis”. To her beloved grandchildren, she was known as “Gandma” and “Momma”. She enjoyed spending quality time with her daughters, grandchildren, family, and friends. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. She also had a special love for her fur baby, Charlie.
Essie transitioned from this earthly life into heavenly eternity on the afternoon of Saturday, July 30, 2022.
Essie leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Stacy Whitsett of Oak Park, IL; and Tracy Whitsett of New Orleans, LA; two grandchildren: Essica Whitsett and Wesley Whitsett; one brother, Albert Creer of Meridian, MS. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends to cherish her memories.
Essie’s husband, father, mother, five brothers, and one sister preceded her in death.
