Mr. George Peebles Sr.'s Obituary
George Harold Peebles, Sr. was born on October 30, 1952, in Meridian, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Peebles, Jr., Carrie Ruth Heard Peebles Staten, and R.B.
Staten; his sister, Betty Jean Staten; and his brother Cleveland "Baba" Wesley Peebles. He departed from this life on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Mississippi.
George grew up in and was a member of New Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Shubuta, Mississippi. In June of 2006, he joined Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Meridian, Mississippi with his dear friends Rev. Eddie & Ruby Creagh. There he served on the Pastor Parish Relation Committee (PPRC), chaired the Trustee Board and Administrative Council, helped the ushers, taught the adult Sunday School class, and served wherever and whenever needed. He was also an honorary choir member because he always had an additional suggestion for the choir.
George was a proud graduate of Shirley-Owens High School/Quitman High School in 1970 in Quitman, Mississippi. He maintained his relationship with the school by being an active member of the Shirley-Owens High School Alumni Association where he was serving as Vice-President. He also functioned as the Treasurer for the Class of 1970 and led the Shirley-Owens High School Homecoming Committee where he served as President of the committee for more than 10 years.
He loved sports and played multiple sports in school. Upon graduation, he attended Jones Jr.
College in Ellisville, MS on a football scholarship. He went on to serve in the Navy and returned to complete his education at Jackson State University in 1977. He was a dedicated member of the Lauderdale County Chapter of Jackson State University National Alumni Association.
He built his career at Amerada Hess from 1980 to 1986 until the company was sold to Denbury Resources. He retired from Denbury in December of 2017. Upon retirement, a group of retirees formed that he valued very much: George Trotter, Rowan Carter, Darious Edmonson, Lee Morgan, Dexter Milsap, Mitch Filer, and John Rogers.
George loved his community and was an active participant and leader in other organizations as well. As an adult, he continued to demonstrate his love of sports by being an avid golfer and he shared his love of golf with his brothers, Oliver "Mickey" Peebles, Ill and Cleveland "Baba" Wesley Peebles. He also played on the Quitman Eagles baseball team. Additionally, he was a coach and the President of the Quitman Little League Boys' Baseball Team. He further contributed to his community by being a member of the American Legions Post 257, Meridian, MS, where at one point he served as Sergeant at Arms.
George's life and beautiful memories will be cherished by his loving and devoted son, George H.

Juliet, TN, Rita Peebles McCarty, Shubuta, MS, Romelda Peebles Jones, Fairburn, GA, Lynn Staten, Brandon, MS, and Barbara (Benny) Dubose, Quitman, MS; an aunt, Patricia (Johnny {deceased}) Hoze Shubuta MS; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, numerous friends.
