Mrs. Gertia Anderson's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our beloved Gertia Weddington Anderson who went to her heavenly home on January 17, 2024. She was a loving mother, devoted wife, cherished grandmother, and a dear friend to many. Born on August 27, 1931 in Claiborne County Mississippi, Gertia was the daughter of the late Leroy Weddington and Sarah Smith Weddington. She grew up in Lorman, Mississippi where she was the fourth of seven children. There she developed a strong sense of family, compassion, and dedication. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings. Gertia was a true inspiration to all who knew her. She had an unwavering love for her family and was always there to offer guidance, support, and unconditional love. Her kindness and generosity affected the lives of many, and her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. At an early age, she dedicated her life to Christ and joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Lorman, Mississippi. Later, she joined St. Mark United Methodist Church in DeKalb, MS where she was a dedicated member serving as the church secretary, a member of the courtesy committee, and president and member of the United Methodist Women. Gertia had a passion for learning. She completed her primary, secondary, and undergraduate degree on the campus of Alcorn State University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1954. Post-graduation, she taught school in Newton, MS and for 37 years, worked as an English teacher at West Kemper High School in DeKalb, MS. In her professional life, she was known for her dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence. Her colleagues respected her for her professionalism and admired her ability to make a positive impact on students. On January 5, 1958, Gertia married the love of her life, the late Ezra Lee Anderson. Their marriage was a true testament to love, comn1itment, and partnership. Together, they had three children and created a loving home filled with laughter, warmth, and endless love. As a mother, she was unparalleled. She dedicated herself to raising her children with love, care, and values that would shape their lives. Her selflessness and unwavering support were a constant source of strength for her children, who will forever be grateful for her guidance and love. She was also a doting grandmother to seven grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with them and created lasting memories through family vacations, holiday celebrations, and countless bedtime stories. Her love for her grandchildren knew no bounds, and they will forever carry her spirit in their hearts. Gertia will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will continue to inspire and guide us. Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will forever remain a guiding light in our lives. She leaves to cherish and treasure her memory; her children, Lee Michael (Leontyne) Anderson, Kelvin (Christina) Anderson, and Charita Anderson Johnson; seven grandchildren, Philip, Justin, Maya, Jordan, Michaela, Jillian and Spencer; two great-grandchildren: Tyquavian and Anaiyah; two sister in laws, Alma Weddington and Dorothy Weddington; and a host of special nieces, nephews and friends.
