Mr. Harrison Long, Jr.'s Obituary
Bro. Harrison Long, Jr., 93, of Enterprise, Mississippi, passed away on February 12, 2014, at Anderson Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. He was born on October 8, 1920, to the late Harrison Long Sr. and the late Nancy (Well) Long in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In 1940 he was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Evelyn Gray Long in Laurel, Mississippi, a union that lasted for 47 years. In 1942 he was drafted into the Army and served during World War II for three years. During his tour of duty in Ger-many his hands and arms froze. His injuries caused him to lose feelings in these parts of his body. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and became a successful vegetable farmer. He was also a charter member of Enterprise Veteran of Foreign Wars Lodge #5786 (in 1978) and a VFW life-time member. Mr. Long grew up in Laurel and attended Second Allen AME Church. After moving to Enterprise in the 40's, he joined. New Fellowship MB Church where he worked faithfully along with his wife. He was an ordained deacon and served in many other capacities. He loved the Lord and truly loved and served New Fellowship for over seventy years. As he would say "The next best thing after Loving the Lord, is watching a good west-ern movie" It became his favorite past time. His survivors include three daughters: Lenora Cooley of Shreveport, LA; Roger Mae (John) Presley of Brooklyn, NY; and Mary Price, Racine, WI; one brother: Bennie Long of Chi-cago, IL; one sister-in-law: Thelma Long of Chicago, 11; two foster sons: James and Sylvester McCray of Meridian; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grand children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including a dear and special friend Mrs. Lola Hardaway and a dear "friend-like-a-son" George M. Hardaway. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons: Johnnie Lee and Willie Charles Edmon-son; 4 brothers: Percy James, Jimmy, Jessie, and Walter Long; two sisters: Hattie Gregory and Rosie Lee Goodwin ; 3 sisters-in-law: Viola Long, Essie Gray, Carrie D. Bums; 2 brothers-in-laws: George Henry Gray and Rev. John C. Bums, Sr. and 4 grandchildren.
