Mr. James Willis' Obituary
James Derrell Willis Jr., age 57, of Meridian, Mississippi, passed away in the arms of his loving wife, Samantha, on October 9, 2025, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, after a long illness. Born in Meridian on April 29, 1968, to his mother Dorothy Ruffin-Mathis and father James Willis, James always lived a life rich in service, love, and dedication to those around him.
James was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Big Ma's Ella and Sadie, and his father, James C. Willis. He is survived by his mother, Ma Dorothy, his sons, Dominique and Daye-Quan, his daughters, Jayla and Leilani, and his cherished grandbabies. He is also survived by his brothers Kendrick, Daryl and
Sister Shakelia, Aunties Mattie, Vera, and Lavoris, Uncles Claude, Chester, George, cousin Pastor John Willis, and a host of friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly.
James was a lifelong learner, always expanding his knowledge to enhance his career and his culinary skills. An excellent military historian, he enjoyed spirited discussions on the topic and also had a passion for coaching football in the "southern style," fostering confidence, comradery, and leadership in his linemen.
When not helping others, James found peace at home, occasionally venturing out for hunting, fishing, or driving a fast sports car.
A well-traveled man, James embarked on his journey of lifelong service by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1987. His eight year commitment took him to the Far East, Australia, the Philippines, and the Middle East. A key participant in the Desert Storm conflict, James served with a finely honed work
ethic, always running towards danger rather than away from it. This commitment to service continued in his civilian life as a Fireman, Correctional Lieutenant, and Deputy Sheriff.
Quiet and disciplined, James was meticulous, thoughtful, and generous. His worldly experiences refined him into a man of exceptional character and a protector of humanity. He was a loving and devoted son, father, husband, and grandfather, a gift to his family and community through his service, mentorship,
and love.
"A limb has fallen from the family tree, but do not grieve for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the fun. The good life I lived when I was strong."
His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who had the great privilege to know him. The Ruffin and Willis families appreciate and thank Berry & Gardner Funeral Homes for your Services and also you for your condolences, prayers, time, contributions, and joy you have brought to our lives through these
