Mr. Joe Allen Sherman's Obituary
Joe Allen "Jo Jo" Sherman was born on August 12, 1947 to Allean Sherman Brown and Joe Butchee, in Meridian, MS. He departed this life on October 25, 2017 at University Medical Center, Jackson, MS. He joined St. John M. B. Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J. E. King, where he was a faithful member, past treasurer, deacon and church caterer. He began his early education at St. Joseph Catholic School and continued his education at East End, Magnolia and T J. Harris High School He went on to pursue his higher education at T J. Harris Junior College and Alcorn State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in social studies. Jo Jo worked in the culinary industry for over 35 years as the founder and past owner of Sherman's Catering. He was a long time employee for Burns & Bums, Inc. until he retired. He also worked at Gulf Coast Seafood and Produce Market and taught school at Southside High School in Heidelberg, Mississippi. He was united in holy matrimony on January 4, 1976 to Jean Landingham of Philadelphia, MS and to this union was born two daughters: Latrina Sherman and Valerie Sherman. He was preceded in death by his father,Joe Butchee; a sister, Katie Washington; a brother, Larry Sherman; beloved aunt, Carrie Cohen; a niece, Michelle Herlong; and a nephew, Deon Herlong. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 41 years, Jean Landingham Sherman; his mother, Allean Sherman Brown; four daughters: Maretta Hudson, Philadelphia, MS;Joanna Hill, Meridian, MS; Latrina Sherman, Baltimore, MD; and Valerie Sherman, Meridian, MS; three grandsons: JaMarcus Bell, JaMarlon Bell and Joseph Nichols; a sister, Gracie (Sylvester, Sr.) Herlong, Lauderdale, MS; nephews: William Issac Sherman, Jacksonville, FL; Sylvester Herlong, Jr., Meridian, MS; Timothy Herlong, Lauderdale, MS; and Leon Herlong, Sr., Meridian, MS; six sister-in-laws; two brother-in-laws; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be missed by special childhood friends: Mary Elizabeth Greer, Esperanza Sullins, Robert "Bucky" Kennedy, Hattie Mae, Robert and Willie George Bell along with special friends: Jimmy Whitehead, Lester Williams and Mitchell Littleton.
