Mrs. Lillian Ophelia Evans Dubra's Obituary
On September 25, 1913 a beautiful baby girl, Lillian Ophelia Evans, was born to Henry and Ruby Evans in Brookhaven, MS. After attending elementary and junior high school in Brookhaven, she moved to Meridian, attended high school and graduated from Wechsler High School in 1931. She met William Emile Dubra of Moss Point, Mississippi and they were married on November 30, 1933. To this union four children were born. Lillian worked in n1any capacities. She \Vas a nurses' assistant at St. Joseph Hospital (Meridian Regional) for twenty-nine (29) years, volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for ten (1 O) years and volunteered with the Lauderdale County Foster Grandparent Program for ten (1 O) years. She retired from this program in 2005 at the age of ninety-two (92). She was very active in civic and social organizations. She was a den mother to Boy Scouts of America, active in the PTA at Wechsler Junior High School; active in the PTO at St. Joseph.
High School; an active member of The Daughters of Elks and the Eastern Star. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and served in the Women's Society of Christian Service (United Methodist Women), served as an usher, sang with the Senior and Gospel Choirs and sang and traveled with the Sweet Spirits Inspirational Choir. She participated in all these activities until her health restrictions would not allow her to do so. She was known to many as "Mama Dubra," because she was godmother to numerous children who are now adults. She made sure she had peppermint candy in her purse to give to the children and the adults. Her hobbies included fishing, sewing, gardening, handicrafts and working puzzles, especially those in the daily newspaper. She also enjoyed Sunday dinner at Western Sizzlin Restaurant. Remembering her "Svveet Spirit" are her four (4) children; William Emile and his wife Vivian; Anna Loraine and her husband Charles, Jr. (deceased); Charles Evans and his wife Marie; Charlotte Ophelia and her husband Harry (deceased); thirteen grandchildren; William, III and his wife Angela, Anthony, Tami and her husband Earl, Charles, Jr. and his wife Nyree, Aubrey, Sean and his wife Bertinna, Adrienne, Phoema and William, Shiree and her husband Fred, Melvin, Jr. and his wife Serena, Ricky, Marcus and his wife Angela, twenty-four (24) great grandchildren and one surviving sibling, Mrs. Donna Evans Kirksey, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
