Mrs. Lola Mae Shadwick Drake's Obituary
Mrs. Lola Mae Drake was born January 8, 1925, the eighth of fifteen children born to Will and Estelle (Matthews) Pringle in Toomsuba, Mississippi. Lola Mae was reared and educated in the Whynot and Shucktown communities of Lauderdale County. In 1941, she married Edward Shadwick and from this union, three children were born: Edward Eugene, Ir. ("Styx"), Willie Lee ("Heavy"), and Gloria Jean ("Punkin", "GloJean").
Lola Mae united with the West Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church at an early age where she served as an usher, deaconess, and member of the Mission Ministry. She devoted her life to the service of others, being employed as a domestic worker and caretaker for many years, caring for many of her family members.
In 1984, five years after the death of her first husband, Lola Mae moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to be joined in holy matrimony to Johnnie E. Drake. They shared three years of bliss until his death in 1987.
Lola Mae has spent the last 31 years in Meridian, Mississippi enjoying her gardens, cooking, sewing, taking long drives, and sharing in good times with friends and family. Her kind spirit, sage advice, zest for life, and love for God has guided her, her family, and friends for many years.
Lola Mae departed this life on August 18, 2018 at Rush Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, fourteen siblings, two spouses, two children, and three grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a son, Edward (Bessie) Shadwick; seven grandchildren, Ronnie Evans, Sabrina (Chuck) Johnson, Lola Shadwick Tilo (Alex) Wilkins, Michael (Phebe) Shadwick Kwame (Amanda) Shadwick and Steven D. Shadwick; eighteen great-grandchildren and several great, great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law, Betty Pringle, Hattie Shadwick, Dorothy (Bobby) Witherspoon, Jammie Drake, and Marie Drake; two brothers-in-law, Irby Drake, Tr., and Calvin (Sara) Drake, Sr; an aunt, Mattie Pringle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
