Mrs. Lucille Smoot Alexander's Obituary
Mrs. Lucille (Smoot) Alexander was born in Geiger, AL of Sumter County on Dec 15, 1927 to the late Prince Smoot Sr. and Sarah B (Johnson) Smoot. She was the first born of seven children born to their union. She confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church, Emelle, AL under the Pastorship of Rev. Charles Mitchell. She left home in her teenage years to live with an Aunt in Birmingham, AL to further her education. After living there a few years she met and married Sandy Byrd, Sr. She subsequently moved to Meridian and after several years met and was remarried to Andy Alexander. She later joined Sunlight Baptist church in Meridian, MS where she served as a long standing member. She was dutiful in church serving in many capacities as a member of the usher board and later as the President of the usher board. She was a member of the Eula Burwell Mission circle, and secretary. She was a member of the Missionary Society, and the assistant secretary. She was also the assistant teacher of the adult Sunday school class. Lucille loved her church and reading her bible. She was an avid reader and critical thinker and always had an open book by her side and spent time enjoying solving word puzzles. She loved traveling and experiencing new adventures with her family and enjoyed numerous trips throughout the country as well as abroad to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother to her family and a kind and generous friend to all who knew her. She was always helping others and constantly had an open door to her home for anyone in need of a meal or a place to stay. Lucille was the consummate giver of her time and support to the sick and shut-in and spent many years caring for her family members: sister, cousin, mother and husband and even the homeless. She supported multiple charitable causes for the poor and disabled, and first responders serving her community. Her favorite pastimes were watching her daily soap operas and Lifetime movie network, cooking for her family, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She departed this life on Thursday, 27 July 2017 and was preceded in death by her husband (Andy), mother and father, an infant child and two sisters (Evelyn Otoole; Wamice Windham). She leaves to mourn 9 children: Sandy Byrd (Bessie), Philadelphia, PA; Deloris Reed (James), Meridian, MS; Bobbie Fluker (Larry), Meridian, MS; Cora Alexander (S/O-Jessie), Meridian, MS; Curtis Alexander (Marzetta), Dallas, TX; Vemessa Alexander, Ellicott City, MD; Alanda Longmire (James), Meridian, MS; Harvey Alexander (Veronica), Atlanta, GA; Jerome Alexander, Atlanta, GA; 1 stepson Edward Rembert (Sonnie), Cincinnati, OH; 1 Step-daughter, Doris Alexander (Cleveland, Oh); 10 grandchildren, 3 Step-grandchildren; sons and daughter in Christ Sharon Smith, Marshall Johnson, and Willie Robins; One brother Prince Smoot Jr.(Geneva), Chicago, IL ; Cora Smoot, Buffalo, NY; Dorothy Fowler (Sandy), Bellwood, IL; Mary Dawson (Johnny), Chicago, IL; and a host of extended and blended grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
