Deacon Luther E. Ellis Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. Luther E. Ellis was born on September 6, 1929, in Lauderdale County, Miss., and was the third son of the late Reverend Tom Ellis and Pellie Driver Ellis. Deacon Ellis departed this life on November 25, 2022, at 10:55 a.m. at Anderson Regional Medical Center, Meridian, Miss. Deacon Ellis accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized on September 6, 1942, along with his brothers Herbert and Reuben. He became a devoted member of West Mt. Moriah Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend A.H. Hardaway. On June 2, 1952, Deacon Ellis entered in Holy Matrimony with the love of his life, Miss. Flora Mae Davis. This union produced three children: Hazel Ann, Luther Charles, and Yolanda Valerie. Deacon Ellis worked hard providing for his young family. His career as a truck driver lasted 45 years beginning with Dixie Highway Express and retiring in 1991 from Roadway Express. He executed his duties as a professional driver with care and safety gaining many recognitions for the millions and millions of miles he traveled without accidents or incidents. Deacon Ellis was a faithful servant of God, his church, and community until his health failed him. His work in his church included a long tenure as Sunday School Superintendent for 29 years, and equally long tenure as Chairman of the Trustee and Deacon Boards, a long-time secretary of Ministers and Deacons Institute, and a member of West Moriah Senior Connection. In the community, Deacon Ellis was an active member of the East Mississippi Baptist State Convention and a member of the local NAACP and member of the cemetery beautification committee. Deacon Ellis leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of more than 70 years, Flora; two daughters, Hazel Watson and Yolanda Emerson (Keith); one son, Luther Charles Ellis (Brenda); Granddaughter, Ashley Ojeda (Gerardo); grandson, Luther C. Ellis II; great grandsons, Gerardo and William Ojeda; great granddaughter, Elizabeth "Lizzy" Ojeda; Brother, Willie B. Ellis of Meridian, MS; Sister, Nannie Williams of Bedford Heights Ohio; Brother, Norman Ellis (Lyna) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sister, Pellie Williams of Joliet, Illinois. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers: George Ellis, Herbert Ellis, Reuben Ellis, and Emmitt Ellis; and his sister, Josie Greer.
