Mrs. Malissa Ann Pettus-Johnson's Obituary
Malissa Ann Pettus-Johnson was the first born of two children to the late Benjamin Franklin Pettus, Sr. and Sadie Easter Williams-Pettus, in Meridian, Mississippi on Monday, January 5, 1948. Malissa developed a strong faith in God from an early childhood and maintained her faith throughout her life. She attended New Hope Baptist Church along with her family. As a child, Malissa excelled in school, graduating from Harris High School at an early age. Upon gradrating high school, she attended Jackson State University, where she met the love of her life and future husband Glyn Johnson. During her career span: she was a substitute teacher for the Indianapolis Public School System; she completed 10 years of service for Indianapolis Citizens Gas & Coke Utility; and, after 25 years retired from Houston Reliant Energy, as the Supervisor of Treasury. Malissa was the epitome of a lady. She was petite in statue, charming, radiating beauty both inside and out, her smile lit up a room. She was soft-spoken, intelligent, generous, loving, kind-hearted and genuine, placing others above herself She appreciated luxury, high-end fashion and was especially passionate about decorating and design. Her favorite pastime was touring estate homes and designer furniture showrooms with her husband. Malissa enjoyed elegant entertaining and sharing her home withfamily and friends. Her appreciation for all things beautiful was evident in her sense of style and the home she created. Recently, when asked what two things she was most grateful for? She replied, "every day the Good Lord opens my eyes and every day my sweetie Glyn opens his. " Malissa passed away Monday, October 3, 2022, with her beloved husband Glyn by her side, holding. her hand. Malissa was predeceased by her parents and her brother Benjamin Franklin Pettus, Jr. She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, her sweetie, Glyn. Malissa nurtured a special maternal bond with her niece Whitney Davis, whom she considered her daughter, Whitney's husband Jeramie Davis, Sr. and their three children, Jasmine, Jeramie Jr., and Journey Davis, whom she endearingly referred to as her babies and her source of joy. She also held a special closeness with her nephew Benjamin Franklin Pettus IIL uncle Milford Williams, Vernal Breashears, James Williams, Henry Quitman, Mr. & Mrs. Jessie & Vera Jennings and cousin Reverend Dr. Robert Johnson Chaplin. In addition, those left to cherish her memory include a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Malissa, affectionately called Missy, will be remembered for her unconditional love for family, sweet gentle nature, positive attitude and big heart. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
