Ms. Margaret C. Mitchell's Obituary
Margaret C. Mitchell was the 13th child and the 7th girl born May 17, 1921 to the late Hayes and Isabelle "Belle" (Houston) Cummings in the red hills of Marshall County (Waterford), Mississippi. She was married to the late Hugh Mitchell. They had two children, Cassandra and the late Henry Mitchell. She attended Rust College and finished her undergraduate work at Jackson State College with a bachelor's degree in Education. She received her Master's Degree in Special Education from Mississippi State University. Hugh and Margaret relocated to Meridian in the mid 1940s. She was employed for 30 years as a teacher in the Meridian Public Schools and retired in 1984. "Mama Mitchell" is an endearing term used by many of the members of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she has been a faithful member for more than 65 years. She began working in the children's Sunday School and that passion for Christian Education has evolved into her being chairperson of the Christian Education Department for over fifty years. She has also served as president of the United Methodist Women for several years and has organized and promoted Bible Study and Bible School. Mrs. Mitchell is considered the Church Mother for many of the members of St. Paul. She cooked soup, cakes and whatever was needed to help people feel better when they were sick or in need. She has been a counselor for many. Her church family, neighbors, and friends have been nourished by her cooking as well as words of encouragement. She leaves to cherish her memory two loving daughters Cassandra (Lamar) Johnson, Willa (Lawrence) Lee; a granddaughter Michele (Thomas) Parker; a grandson Mitchell Johnson; a brother Hugh (Clara) Cummings; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends; and her children of St. Paul. She was preceded in death by her parents Hayes and Isabelle Cummings, her husband Hugh Mitchell, her son Herbert Mitchell, her brothers Lannie, Robert, Belvie Lee, John, Willie Clalyton, and Zannie,, her sisters Hattie Byers, Mattie Stevenson, Nannie Adams, Bernice Williams, Mary Lou Thomas, Naddie Smith, and baby Walker.
