Mrs. Mary Lee Walker Herlong's Obituary
“Madea” as she was officially known, was born to the Late Professor Henry Walker and the Late Katie Lee Lard of Cuba, Alabama. She joined the Morning Star Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful member until the deterioration of her health. She was united in holy matrimony to James Albert Herlong, Sr. and to this union nine children were born. What she loved most in life were God, her family, and quilting. She has aided in keeping many of us warm during the winter because of the beautiful quilts she designed and made. If one were to stop by her house to visit, you couldn't leave before being offered something to eat. She was a kind, gentle lady who was a firm believer that no mountain was too high to climb and no goal was unachievable. She would always say, “The opportunity is out there to become whatever you choose to, but you have to go after it." “And, whatever you do put God first and Jet him lead the way." Mary Lee was preceded in death by her husband, James Sr., a daughter- Mattie Jane, three grandchildren, both parents, and all nine of her siblings. She leaves behind to cherish her most precious memories; four daughters: Mary Alice Reed (Tommy Lee) Tomsuba, MS, Annie Maxie Herlong (Jacob) Lauderdale, MS, Tweet Ester Hare (Allen) Marion, MS, and Odessa Jones (Jasper) Enterprise, AL; four sons: James Herlong Jr. (Alberta) and Sylvester Herlong Sr. (Grace) all of Lauderdale, MS, Hosea Herlong of Birmingham, AL, and Moses Herlong (Freda) Demopolis, AL. A sister-in-law Catherine Walker, twenty-three grand-children, forty-one great-grandchildren, several great, great-grandchildren, and a special friend Leola Hopson; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
