Mr. Matthew Sam Sr.'s Obituary
Matthew Sam, Sr., of Meridian, Mississippi and formerly of Opelousas, Louisiana, transitioned
away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. He was born in Opelousas, Louisiana on November 26,
1947, the son of the late Murphy and Thelma (Edward) Sam.
Matthew graduated from Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana with a major in
History. He attended Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and received his masters
from Mississippi State, MS. He served in the Vietnam War; then worked several years in the
Navy Civil Services before retirement. His hobbies included cooking for his family & friends and
bowling.
He is survived by his three children: Daughter Valerie Denise Sam and her partner, Donald H.
King, of The Villages, FL; Son Matthew Sam, Jr. of Meridian, MS; Son Christopher Allen Sam
and his wife, Alexandra (Loza) Sam of North Ft. Myers, FL; Sister Emily R. Jackson of Houston,
Texas; Grandchildren: Derek James Clark of Hollywood, FL, Brianna Perez & Valentina Perez of
North Ft. Myers, FL, and one great-grandchild: Derek James Clark, Jr. of Hollywood, FL.
The interment and private memorial service will be celebrated on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at
the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Newton, MS.
