Mr. Melvin Davis, Sr.'s Obituary
Melvin Davis, Sr. was born December 7, 1936, in Jasper County Mississippi to the late Richard T. Davis, Sr. and Jane Ida K. Davis. He was the oldest child born to this union and the last living sibling. He was preceded in death by his sister Wydessa Kegler and brothers Richard T. Davis, Jr. and Eugene Davis. He was a lifelong member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Rose Hill, Mississippi. He served as the chairman of the administrative board for more than 35 years. Mr. Davis received his education from Jasper County Training School; Jarvis Christian College, Hawkins, Texas; Jackson State University; Mississippi Valley State University; University of Southern Mississippi; and Mississippi State University. He worked in the Quitman Consolidated School District for 18 years as a teacher, a coach, and an assistant principal. Then he was employed as an assistant personnel manager at Burlington Industries Plant of Stonewall, Mississippi for nearly 19 years. He was a veteran and a charter member of Enterprise Memorial Post #5786 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also served as a trustee of the Quitman School District and as a member of the Board of Directors of H. C. Watkins Memorial Hospital in Quitman. Mr. Davis departed this life on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at 10:45 a.m. at G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving, faithful, and dedicated wife of more than 50 years Bonnie L. Davis, Newton, Mississippi; his son Melvin (Barbara) Davis, Jr., Lucedale, Mississippi; his granddaughter Alana Brown Davis, Tylertown, Mississippi; two aunts: Ellie Dahmer. Earnestine Bolden; One uncle: Saumpart Davis; his brothers in law: Roy (Hazel) Lyles, Jimmie Earl (Paulette) Lyles, Frank E. (Agnes) Lyles: his sisters-in-law: Mary Elmetta Wright, Daisy Vivian (Kermit) Harness, Mae Florence (Ret. Col. Charles) Rice; and a host of relatives, colleagues, former students, and friends.
