Rev. Porter Amos' Obituary
Rev. Porter Amos was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 7, 1935 to the late Adolph Amey and Betty Knox. The vine was rooted in the Baptist belief where he served faithfully on the battle field for the Lord. He served on the usher board and was a member of the male chorus. He also kept his promise to serve the Lord until he died. Rev. Amos loved his family, Pastor, 5th Street Church family, people, and traveling. He had a love for all types of music, and he played instruments periodically. After high school, Rev. Amos joined the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War. He worked at Lake Hotel as a maintenance mechanic in Chicago, IL. He also worked at L.B. Construction Company. The Holy Spirit guided him to the St. James Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Jessie E. White. He moved to Meridian, MS in 1970. In 1988, he united with the Fifth Street Baptist Church, Meridian, MS. He announced his calling to the ministry in 1994 and was licensed by Rev. William C. Brown in 1995. The Holy Spirit guided him to the St. James Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Jessie E. White. He moved to Meridian, MS in 1970. In 1988, he united with the Fifth Street Baptist Church, Meridian, MS. He announced his calling to the ministry in 1994 and was licensed by Rev. William C. Brown in 1995. The joy of his life was serving God, helping others, and living life to the fullest. The night call to rest was received by him on April 19, 2013 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. The legacies of his seasons are left to his Pastor and faithful friend, William C. (Margaret) Brown; god brother, Bobby Joe (Ruby) Merrell; a special friend, Odessa Warren; and a host of relatives and friends.
