Mr. Reginald Scotty Bates' Obituary
THE MELODIOUS LIFE & LEGACY of
Reginald Scott Bates
“Scotty”
Reginald Scott Bates, affectionately known to many as Scotty, was born January 28, 1967, in Meridian, MS to the late Joe Henry Bates and Willie Mae Dubose Bates as their youngest child. It was evident at an early age Reginald would become a prodigy and leave an incredible mark in the lives of many during his life time. On September 1, 2025, God whispered to Scotty that it was time to come unto Him and rest.
Reginald confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Pilgrim Hill United Methodist Church. As a child, his mother encouraged him to take piano lessons, and it was soon discovered that he had a God given gift and natural talent for music. Under the leadership and teaching of Mrs. Laura Inge and Mr. George Reece, Reginald proceeded to leave his footprints as an accomplished musician, Minister of Music and Instructor.
Reginald received his education in the Meridian Public School System. During his early school years, Reginald was a member of the Boy Scouts and 4-H club. He also started his musical journey by playing the piano for church. While attending Meridian High School, Reginald excelled as a member of the Meridian High Wildcat Band playing saxophone. Because of his exceptional talent, he earned a position in the Loins All State Band and the McDonald’s All American Band traveling the United States. Upon high school graduation in 1985, Reginald received a music scholarship to The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi graduating in 1991. While attending USM, Reginald shared his talent as Minister of
Music with several churches in the Hattiesburg and Collins area. He also studied Piano/Keyboard at Yamaha University graduating in 2005.
Upon graduation from USM, Reginald returned to Meridian to share his gift as a Saxophonist, Pianist and Instructor. He worked as a music instructor in the Meridian Public School system for several years. He also worked as a Sales Manager, repairing band instruments and instructing music at Peavey Melody Music and a Piano/Keyboard Manager at Music and Arts Meridian. Reginald also worked for East MS State Hospital as a Direct Care Supervisor and shared his talent by playing the piano for the patients. Later, Reginald expanded his professional career and became a licensed Insurance Agent for AIG. He continued to serve as Minister of Music for several churches in the Meridian and surrounding areas including the Meridian Naval Air Base Chapel. Reginald started his real love teaching young and old how to play musical instruments from his home. Through hard work and determination, Reginald opened the R. Scott Bates Music Studio offering music lessons for woodwind instruments, piano, organ and voice.
As a mentor and caring person, Reginald opened his heart and home to many young people who were his students that he cared for dearly, and as a Foster parent with the help of his parents, Joe and Willie Mae. He loved seeing his students thrive and succeed in life. Traveling and eating out were always a part of his life with his parents, foster children and family. As his health started to decline, he never let it deter him. He continued to serve his community by playing for many musical events and traveling to conventions to represent his beloved choirs. Reginald’s love for music and life will be treasured and kept in the hearts of all those that knew him.
To cherish his loving memories, Reginald’s legacy will be treasured by his sister, Sylvia (Walter) Gibson, Jackson, MS; two brothers Elder Glen (Mary) Bates and Bishop Jerome (Shelia) Bates, all of Meridian, Mississippi; aunt, Mrs. Elsie Bates, Collinsville, Mississippi, uncle and aunt, Clinton (Lela) Bates all of Meridian, Mississippi and uncle, Mr. George R.
