Mrs. Roletha Sloan McCurty's Obituary
Roletha Sloan McCurty was born September 28, 1927 in Lauderdale County Mississippi, the fourth of six children to the late Hester and Freeman Sloan. She united with the Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfull in various ministries. She graduated from Harris High School and attended college in Memphis, Tennessee. Sister Roletha was employed as a domestic worker until accepted into the Matty Hersee School of Nursing in the 60's. She was one of the first of only two African Americans to graduate from the nursing program, June 27, 1969. Sister Roletha, known as "Nurse McCurty", loved working at Matty Hersee, where she was employed until its closing in 1986, and there she then retired. She also loved caring for and serving those in need, which is how she got this name. She continued nursing at several hospitals and clinics after retirement. She united in holy matrimony to Brother Lensey McCurty in 1951 and to this union six children were born. Sister Mccurty was a faithful attendee of the Baptist Convention annually and was faithful to the mission of the church. She loved working with the missionary society of the church where she served as secretary preparing for the yearly church programs. She was involved in the church from an early age and continued to serve until her health failed her in 2017. She was devoted to her community and did various volunteer services. Sister Roletha was a committed, diligent, and faithful worker for the Lord until he called her home on Sunday, January 7, 2018. Sister Roletha was preceded in death by her mother, Hester Sloan; her father, Freeman Sloan; her sister Geneva Cummings; her brothers R. D. Sloan and Amos Sloan; her son, Roy L Mccurty; and her daughter: Dell I Robertson. Sister Roletha leaves to cherish her precious and never forgotten memories four daughters: Jerolyn Croft, Jo Ann (Lou) Cole, Meridian Mississippi; Ruth Edna (George) Brooks, Moreno Valley, California; and Jacqueline (Leroy) Gaten, Jacksonville, Florida; a son-in-law: Frederick Robertson; a daughter-in-law: Linda Mccurty, Meridian, Mississippi; one brother: Ellis Sloan; one sister: Delories Sloan, Meridian, Mississippi; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many wonderful special friends.
Sister Roletha is one of God’s most precious creations and she is sorely missed.
