Mr. Sylvester Hood, Jr.'s Obituary
Sylvester Hood, Jr. ,beloved brother and uncle, was born on October 5, 1942 in Meridian, MS, to the late Sylvester Hood, Sr. and Jewel (Bonner) Hood. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Meridian, MS. Some years later in life, he united with the First United Baptist Church, Stonewall, MS., where he was active in many activities, groups and organizations. During the last decade of his life, he reunited with the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until his illness. In his youth, he honed his love of music and the great outdoors. Sylvester graduated from Middleton Attendance Center in 1961 and later attended Harris Junior College. He joined the United States Air Force on April 5, 1966. He proudly served his country with honor for six years. While serving in the USAF, he earned the rank of Sergeant. Sylvester served in the capacity of Security Policeman, served two(2) tours of duty in Vietnam during the Vietnam Conflict. Also while in the Air Force, Sylvester received numerous medals and honors including: Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Upon completions of his duties in the United States Air Force, he received_ an Honorable Discharge. After returning home, Sylvester became affectionately known to his close friends as "Searg ". For his bravery, dedication and service to our country, we his family and friends salute and thank him with humble gratitude. He loved to entertain family and friends with his "Annual Birthday Barbecue" and he only shared his secret sauce recipe with his brother-in-law, Paul. He also had a great love for all types of music including; gospel, jazz, R&B and country. One of his greatest passions of hobbies that he returned home with from Vietnam was a genuine love for music. He had recorded reel to reels, cassettes, old school 45 s and Lp s. He and his family relished in singing and dancing to his music. Sylvester had a strong work ethic and believed in getting the work done. He had an extensive career with Standard Drug Company of Meridian; Nathan Daniels Roofing Company and Kimbrell Roofing Lumber Company.
