Mrs. Sylvia Jean Loyd Martin's Obituary
With one powerful heartbeat, the journey of life begins. On November 13, 1954, a courageous journey began when Sylvia Jean Loyd was born to Leroy and Alean Loyd in Meridian, MS. On Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia surrounded by her family. Sylvia’s journey of life ended with the same one heartbeat from whence her life began and a bright shining star in the Loyd Family transitioned to a place of complete rest. She is preceded in death by her father, Bishop L.R. Loyd and her husband Ed Martin.
Sylvia’s education began at Middleton Attendance Center and in 1970 she transferred to Southeast High School Attendance Center as part of the integration mandate. Later, she began her collegiate studies at Alcorn State University. She completed her education at Phillips Community College in New Orleans. After moving to Atlanta, she found immediate employment working as a tailor for Macy’s. She tailored for many well-known public figures which included Louis Farrakhan, Deon Sanders, Aretha Franklin and MC Hammer.
Sylvia was raised in a home surrounded by faith, hope and love. At an early age, Sylvia experienced the presence of the Holy Ghost. On March 9, 1974, she united in Holy Matrimony to Ed Martin Jr. The Lord blessed her to birth two sons. Ed (Sharon) and Marcus. She also raised a grandson, Marcus Junior (MJ). In 1991, Sylvia became a member of Solid Rock Pentecostal Church. UPC under the leadership of Bishop Alonzo Terry. She served faithfully as a hostess, choir member and caterer. She thoroughly enjoyed the ladies’ bible studies and conferences. Solid Rock became a lifeline for her family.
Sylvia was a strong and giving individual who loved and dedicated herself to taking care of others. She loved to cook for others, especially those she loved. She was a uniquely talented seamstress who could visualize a garment, design a pattern and execute the finished product. She developed patterns for her family, friends and clients. She had a flair for style & fashion and was known by her clients for her professionalism and sense of perfection.
Sylvia will forever be cherished in the heart of her devoted mother, Alean Loyd; two sons, Ed Martin (Nicole) and Marcus Martin of Atlanta, GA; one step-son, Justin Hayes of Memphis, TN; eight grandchildren, Marcus MaShel Jr. (MJ), Nina Na’lone, Alexis, Tatyana, Justin Jr., Jaylen and Mariah; one brother, David Delaine Loyd (Linda) of Meridian, MS; seven sisters, Metris Dylan Davis (Jimmie) Jonesboro, LA; Verna McGrew, Arvella Loyd, Edith Ann Horner (Carey) all of Meridian; Vancheta Mitchell (Jerome) of Pushmataha, AL, Tonda Henry (Dave) of Atlanta, GA, Tiffany Hudnall (Reginald) of Meridian, MS; a loyal dedicated niece, Jennifer Richardson of Atlanta, GA and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives & friends.
