Ms. Sylvia McKenzie's Obituary
With two powerful heartbeats, the wonderful journey of life began on April 2, 1973, for the McKenzie twins in which one was given the name of Sylvia Shree McKenzie when she was born to Washington McKenzie Jr. and Elizabeth Parker McKenzie. On Friday, September 29, 2023, Sylvia's journey of life ended at Ochsner Rush H C Watkins Hospital where she transitioned to her heavenly home. She is preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Parker McKenzie; her maternal grandparents, Thomas and Ruby Parker; her paternal grandparents, Washington, Sr and Katie Ruth McKenzie; and several aunts and uncles.
Being raised in a Godly family, Sylvia was taught the Word of God and accepted Christ at a young age and joined Mt. Gilead Baptist Church under the leadership of her uncle, Rev Advial McK enzie. Later in her adult life, she joined Mt. Rose Baptist Church under the leadership of her father, Rev, Washington McKenzie, Jr. She was a faithful member until the Lord called her home.She was a graduate of Quitman High School Class of 1991. After graduation, she attended Alabama Southern College in Thomasville AL and obtained her Nursing Degree. She started her career in Nursing at Rush Foundation Hospital and later worked at East Mississippi State Hospital, Bedford Manor, The Oaks Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and ended her career at Lakeside Health and Rehabilitation Center when her health began to fail.
Sylvia was very active and served in several capacities within her community: President of the Clarke County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, the Committee for McK enzie for Sheriff, and Quitman Youth Football Nurse. She loved her children with her whole heart and always supported them in whatever they participated in whether it was band, basketball, football, baseball or JROTC. Wherever they were, she was there supporting them.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her loving children, MaKayla McKenzie, Camryn McKenze and Ludrick Cameron II; her father and bonus Mother, Rev Washington McKenzie Jr and Faye Pope McKenzie; her sisters, Angelia Spencer, her twin Cynthia McKenzie, Latoria (Quinton) McCall and Nickita (Leroy) Council; her brother, DaShawn Gordon; her nieces, Chasity Spencer, Eyrica Willis, Hailey McCall, Aubrey McCall, KeAmber Council and LaKendrea Forthner; her nephews, Erick Anderson, Darius Spencer, Eris Spencer, and Xavier Council; her God-Brothers, Tobey Bartee and Rev Michael Prince; her God-Sisters, Latoya Prince and Anitra Spencer; her God-Son, Mason Robinson; her best friend, Bettie Glaspie; her Lylas sisters; her special friend, Nikita Minor and her aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and extended family.
