Mrs. Thelma Louise Johnson's Obituary
Thelma Louise Johnson was born on November 22, 1921 in Lauderdale County to the late Lila (Welch) Matthews and Henry Matthews. She received her education at Holbrook School located in Whynot, Mississippi. Thelma worked at Wechsler cafeteria, Life of Georgia, and at Riley Hat Shop (in her early years where she acquired a love for hats). She was united in marriage to Leroy Johnson, Sr. To this union five children were born; Robert Lee, Rosetta, Lamar, Leroy Jr., and Daniel. As a homemaker, she acquired some excellent cooking skills. She could make some of the best biscuits, cornbread, fried chicken and fish. Her vegetables were extremely good as well. Thelma never had a driver's license, but when her husband Leroy was alive, where you saw one you normally would see the other. They traveled and visited relatives locally and out of state. Thelma would give you her last with a smile. She was a caring, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, and neighbor. Thelma accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of her life as a youngster at Salem Baptist Church (Whynot, Mississippi) and united at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church (Yantley, Alabama) where she was a deaconess, member of mission board, pastor aide, choir member, and helped wherever needed. She was active in the East Mississippi and the West Alabama local and state National Baptist Conventions. They moved their membership to Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church (Meridian, Mississippi) in their late years where she also served as a deaconess. She departed this life on August 12, 2015 at Rush Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. Thelma leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Rosetta (Charles) Robertson; two sons Robert (Mildred) Johnson; Lamar (Cassandra) Johnson all of Meridian, Mississippi; a sister Lillian Kelley in Grand Rapids, Michigan; some very special nieces, nephews, cousins, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters: Vestula Matthews, Lucile Barnes, Lola Mae Hunter, Clara Bell Reed, Elmira Coleman; five brothers: John Henry Matthews, Benjamin Matthews, Willie Matthews, Eddie Matthews, T. S. Matthews; her husband Leroy Johnson, Sr.; two sons: Daniel (Phyllis) Johnson, and Leroy (Bettye) Johnson, Jr.
