Mrs. Tommie Jean Shadwick Darden's Obituary
Tommie Jean Shadwick Darden was born March 1, 1931 to Thomas and Betty Jordan Shadwick in the Nellieburg Community. She was the tallest and most active of seven children. She attended Laird School and graduated from T.J. Harris High School in 1949. She married Raymond Darden in 1949 and moved to the Bailey Community. To this union two children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas A. and Betty J. Shadwick; siblings Edna Salter, Mollie Lou Benton and Lloyd Shadwick; her husband Raymond Darden; daughter Romola Darden Cross and grandson De Von Turner. In 1955 Tommie Jean graduated from the St. Joseph's School of Nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was employed at St. Joseph's Hospital for more than thirty years. She carried her nursing skills from the hospital to her home and the community as she cared for her parents, daughter and daughter-in-law. Tommie Jean united with the Pilgrim Rest Methodist Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Wendal Taylor. She was an active member in the church serving as secretary of the Administrative Board and member of the United Methodist Women and the adult Choir. She regularly attended Sunday School. On Wednesday, July 23, 2014, Tommie Jean transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Daphne Darden; grandchildren, Dylan Cross, Byron Cross, and Antwan Turner; great grandsons,Jacarous Cross and Ethan Cross;sisters, Gwendolyn Wansley, Barbra Thomas and Bettye Lewis; and a host of nieces nephews and other relatives.
