Mrs. Tommie Jean Washington's Obituary
Tommie Jean Washington was Bron February 16, 2943 to the late Tommy and Dora Smith. “T.J.”, as she was affectionately called by many, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Anderson’s Regional Medical Center. Tommie Jean was educated at st. Joseph’s School in Meridian, MS and Englewood High School in Chicago, IL. She received her degree in Library Science and served as Librarian at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago until her retirement; then she moved to Washington, D.C. Tommie Jean was very active in politics and served as president of her Library Union - Local 1215, was a delegate for Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama. Tommie Jean also served on a committee that brought Nelson Mandela to the United States.
Tommie Jean moved back to Meridian, MS in 2005 and was very active in retirement.She served as Secretary for Crime Stoppers and as President of the Finance Committee at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Tommie Jean was a member of several organizations; LAWS Shooting Club, ACE’s, the Servants of Mary and the Master Gardner’s Club. She also loved to travel with her Lifetime QUEST Group at Meridian Community College.
Tommie Jean is survived by her husband, Frank Washington, Jr., who cared for her faithfully throughout her illness; son, Edward Joseph, step-son, Frank ‘L.B’ Washington, III; siblings, Donald (Ann) Smith of Chicago, IL, Retha (James) Walker of Grand Rapids, MI, Jimmie (Carol) Smith, Sr. of Meridian, MS, Joey (Landris) Smith of Birmingham, AL, Anthony (Ernestine) Huggins of Fort Worth, TX, Lucius Parks, and Mary Smith; two grandchildren, Joseph Cox and Sharlene Cox; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other blended family members, relatives, friends and loved ones too numerous to list.
