Mrs. Willie Mae Stokes' Obituary
Mrs. Willie Mae Stokes was born August 15, 1941, to Jerry Welch and Willie Shanks Welch. Mrs. Willie Mae was the third of seven children. At a young age, Mrs. Willie Mae became a member of Center Ridge Baptist Church. She completed her primary education in DeSoto, MS. She later finished her secondary education in Jackson, MS by obtaining her high school diploma. On November 23, 1962, she was joined in holy matrimony to Alonzo Stokes, Sr. In this union seven children and five stepchildren were nurtured and raised. In 1996, Mrs. Willie Mae moved to Jackson, MS. There, she obtained employment at the United States Postal Service in downtown Jackson, MS. While in Jackson, she faithfully attended Living Word Christian Church. On February 8, 2014, Mrs. Willie Mae Stokes was called home. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Willie Welch; husband, Alonzo Stokes, Sr.; son, Alonzo Stokes, Jr.; stepsons, Roy Lee Stokes, Charlie Stokes, and Sylvester Stokes; and siblings, L.J. Falconer, Cleveland McFarland, Sr., Jerry Welch, and Katie Ruth Jones. Mrs. Willie Mae leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Delphine (Bobby) Gaines of Meridian, MS; Karen (Anthony) Chambers of Flora, MS; Maureen (Roy) Williamson of Waynesboro, MS; Anita (Fredrick) Fortner of Jackson, MS; Jenny Stokes of Jackson, MS; stepdaughter, Louise Stokes of New York; son, Jeffery (Karen) Stokes of Rochester, NH; stepson, Bobby Jean Stokes of Quitman, MS; special sons, Michael (Deirdre) Stokes of Hattiesburg, MS and Owenton "Alex" Stokes of Sanford, ME; sister, Fannie Earbin of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Eugene (La Keisha) Welch of Pine Bluff, AR; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
